About this data
Figures come from the UNHCR Population Statistics API, which records registered returns of refugees and internally displaced persons per calendar year, alongside the population still displaced at year end.
UNHCR counts registered or verified returns. Many Syrians return spontaneously without registering, so actual return numbers are likely higher than the official figures shown here. Yearly totals are also revised retroactively as UNHCR consolidates field reports.
The sharp acceleration visible from 2025 onwards follows the fall of the Assad government in December 2024, after which return movements increased across most governorates.
